Our Matriarch

Frieda Bassman

The Bassman family legacy begins with Frieda Bassman — a woman of extraordinary courage and unwavering faith. Born in a small town high in the Carpathian Mountains of pre-war Europe, Frieda survived the Holocaust, enduring the loss of nearly her entire family and unimaginable hardship at the hands of the Nazis.

After liberation, Frieda built a new life in America. She settled in Chicago, raised a family, and devoted nearly fifty years to nursing — caring for others with the same resilience and compassion that had carried her through the darkest of times.

Her life story is captured in the book Miracles: The Extraordinary Life of Frieda Bassman by Michael Lesher — an account of one woman's inspiring journey through courage, faith, and hope.
